1. Drink More Water
Your body loses a lot of nutrients through sweating, urination, and even breathing. The quickest and most efficient way to replenish those nutrients is by drinking more water. Scientists and nutritionists can argue over how much is enough, but there is no set number. It depends on your age, weight, health level and activity. The Harvard Institute of Medicine suggests drinking 125 ounces (15 cups) a day for optimal bodily function.
2. Avoid Processed Foods
All processed foods aren’t bad. You might be surprised to learn that whole wheat bread, canned beans and even pasta sauce are processed. Yet, there are some that you should avoid and eat only in moderation. Frozen foods and ready-made dishes are heavily processed and could contain copious amounts of preservatives, sugars and fats. So, choose lightly processed foods instead.
3. Quit Smoking
It’s no secret: cigarettes are bad for you. They contain chemicals that restrict blood flow to your skin and can lead to heart and lung disease later in life. According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) someone who starts smoking at 15 is three times as likely to die of cancer. After just three days of quitting, the amount of oxygen in your blood increases, your sense of taste and smell improves, and you’ll notice a boost in energy.
4. Stretch In The Morning
Some people stretch instinctively in the morning when they wake up. Without you consciously knowing it, your body wants to limber up for the day ahead. Stretching in the morning improves blood flow and shakes away any stiffness you might have lingering from the night before. Another benefit of stretching is that it relieves stress. You might have a tough day ahead, so a quick morning stretch can improve your mood before you even leave the house.
5. Start Lifting
Lifting weights, also called resistance training, is a great way to improve your health. You don’t have to be an elite athlete either. You can use free weights, resistance bands, or even your own bodyweight. The benefits are enormous. Lifting weights can minimize your risk for osteoporosis, reduce stress and anxiety, and make daily tasks much easier on the body. If you don’t use it, you lose it.
6. Do Some Cardio
Cardiovascular exercise is one of the best things you can do to improve your health. It boosts your metabolism so that you can better process the foods you eat and maintain a healthy weight. Also, your heart is a muscle. Cardio will improve your heart health and reduce the chances you’ll get cardiovascular illnesses later in life. Cardiovascular exercise releases hormones throughout the body that reduce stress and fatigue. You will simply feel better.
7. Eat More Fruits and Veggies
The World Health Organization (WHO) advises that you should eat five portions of fruits and vegetables each day. That’s because these foods contain vitamins and minerals that are vital to your overall health and wellbeing. They’re also an excellent source of fiber and can help your digestive system. With so many varieties to choose from, you’re sure to find some that taste great.
